This book was given to me as a Goodreads First Read books. It’s by DK Publishing, the same company that does the Eyewitness Books that I was so used to in middle school with full sketches of dinosaurs and the like. Well, this is a bit more simple than even those books that I’m used to for a younger audience even though it’s targeted towards a young adult audience (and I’m also assuming it’s targeted towards females).
The book starts off in Ancient Greece and it shows the different ways that men and women wore clothes, sandals, and jewelry and the modern way for a girl to emulate the same look in the modern world using modern clothes. It’s very simplistic and to the point. Even though it shows the different male and female fashions throughout history it only seems to be focused on a female reader so the target audience is very specific.
The front cover is very colorful and shows things that were inside the book, though I couldn’t get much out of it in terms of color since the ARC was in black and white. The final book will be hardcover and in full color, which will make the pictures of the 60s-70s era that is being covered pop out remarkably.
I think the best part about the book is at the end with the illustrated glossary that shows the definitions to a lot of the words that are used along with lovely illustrations. I think my favorite illustrations were the ones for skirts, sleeves, and cuffs. They’re all very distinctive and very lovely.
Overall, I’d give this book 3 out of 5 stars due to the fact that it seems way too simplistic to what I’m used to from DK Publishing and for the target audience as well. It has enough information to make it interesting but not enough to make it seem like you’re learning much. I would recommend you pick it up from your local library/bookstore if anything to just look at the amazing color photography that’s going to be in it. Maybe DK is thinking of the audience it’s set for as well since they’re so used to the modern age and getting all the information that’s on the book on the internet.
